How do I choose a gas station brand for my new gas station?

Choosing the right brand is a big decision. Some brands, like Esso and Mobil, are known and trusted across Canada.

Some brands focus on low prices, others on high-quality gas, loyalty programs, and service. Esso and Mobil are known for having high quality gas, strong loyalty programs (PC Optimum), and clean stations.

Building a branded gas station is a smart choice. It can help you attract customers because they already know and trust the brand. Esso and Mobil are strong brands that many people recognize.

How do I build a specific brand of gas station?

If you are looking for a national brand, like Esso, Mobil, or Esso Cardlock, we will assist in obtaining Esso/Mobil Trademark approval and follow the brand rules in the site development.

Is it hard to get a loan to build a gas station in Canada?

Most of the major Banks and Lenders in Canada provide financing for gas station development, purchases, or site improvements. Reach out to Global Fuels to learn more about our exclusive financing program with one of the major Canadian Banks.

What are the different types of gas stations I can build?

You can buy or development several variations of gas stations. Some are just for gas, some have a small store, and some have a car wash or an auto repair store.

  • When most people think of a "gas station," they're picturing a retail gas station. These stations sell fuel to everyday drivers, typically offering options like regular, premium, and diesel. In addition to fuel, many retail gas stations also feature a convenience store, providing a range of snacks, drinks, and other essentials for customers on the go.
  • Cardlock gas stations are mostly for businesses with trucks or big fleets of vehicles. Drivers use a special card to pay for the gas, not cash or a regular credit card. They only sell diesel fuel.
  • Some gas stations have both retail and cardlock pumps. This can be a good way to attract many different types of customers.
  • Many gas stations have a small store attached called a "convenience store," “variety store” or "c-store." They sell things like snacks, drinks, cigarettes, and lottery tickets. Having a c-store is a great way to bring in additional revenue for your gas station.
  • Some gas stations have a fast-food restaurant inside or attached to them. This could be a popular chain (like Tim Hortons or A&W) or a local restaurant.
  • Some gas stations have extra services like a car wash, a garage to fix cars, or even a propane filling station. These extra services can help you make more money.

Should I build a gas station in a small town, or a big city?

Both small towns and big cities can be good places to buy a gas station. A small town might have less competition, but a big city might have more customers.

What should I look for when choosing a location for a new gas station in Canada?

  • Make sure you're allowed to build a gas station in the location you choose. There are zoning laws that restrict where certain types of businesses can be located.

  • Make sure the land is big enough for your gas station, the pumps, and a convenience store or other amenities.

  • You'll need water, electricity, and sewer connections.

  • Find out if there are any plans for new roads or construction that might affect your gas station.
